Overview

Art2WearTM (A2W) is an educational event where students gain experience by coordinating and producing an annual wearable art production. Within the organization are different student-led committees in charge of certain tasks. The communications committee is in charge of creating the branding for the shows yearly theme and the show booklet displaying the designed garments.

I was the communications committee head for A2W's 2024 theme of "Dimension," and led a small team of 3 designers in the ideation and creation process for the brand that year. The designers who were a part of the team joined voluntarily, as this was an extracurricular for students.

The 2024 show was set up as a fashion show displaying wearable art on the runway. The show was held in NC State's Stewart Theatre. The branded materials for the show were designed by the communication committee collectively and as the committee head I lead design meetings and the overall look of the brand and format of the booklet.

The event booklet was given to about 760 attendees. More about the event can be found on the A2W Dimensions Website.

Booklet

The booklet served as a program guide that included an explanation of the collections and the theme. It also credited the leadership and student board as well as the faculty who were involved in the planning and execution of the show.

The booklet was designed by the communications committee with each member being assigned 3 collection spreads as well as the student board, leadership, single look, and dimensions logo spreads. I designed the remainder of the booklet which included the cover, table of contents, and information pages. I designed the "Evolve" and "Journey to the West" collection spreads.

At the end of the design process the student directors and I looked through all the pages and made edits to ensure overall coherence within the booklet. In that process, I made major changes to the layout of the "Psilocybin" and "Entropy" collection spreads. I was also in charge of compiling all the pages into one document and making any final edits before it went to print.

At the beginning of our design process, we were given the word "Dimensions" and had to come up with a brand around that word.

At the beginning of our design process, we were given the word "Dimensions" and had to come up with a brand around that word.

As a group, we all created mood boards that represented what we thought of dimensions and how it could become a physical look for a brand. I started my ideation process by interpreting the word in a literal sense and finding imagery with lines and squares that create dimension. I also thought about the conceptual idea of different dimensions in space and found imagery that represented auras or portals.

We then took aspects that we liked from each other's mood boards to have leading images in our ideas for our brand. We agreed on using lines to create dimensions while also having 3D aspects to represent the different ways to represent physical dimension. We also agreed on a color scheme as a group, and were driven by having bright contrasting colors that could emerge off a dark background.

As a group, we decided our logo would incorporate lines that would show dimension and create an optical illusion effect. Many of our iterations included our motif of radial lines masked within the word "dimensions." We all agreed on that look, so we experimented with color combination and arrangement of the radial lines. One issue we ran into was keeping the logo readable the lines added. Through changing the kerning and width of the letters, we improved the readability of the logo.

Our primary logo used a green background in order to be seen against dark backgrounds. We also created an alternative logo using an oulined version of the text to match the title treatment used in the booklet.

Motif Design

For the brand's motifs, we each came up with ideas an discussed which ones we wanted to use for our brand. My idea was to show dimension through 3D shapes, combining ones with flat faces and inflated ones to show the range in dimension. I also wanted to use contour blobs around silhouettes in the booklet.

After discussing as a group, we decided to use inflated blobs that would also be used as contours for silhouettes. We decided for the booklet, to keep these blobs in the brand's yellow color so they would be consistent and pop out against the dark background. We added the radial lines to our motifs as well, making those in any color in our palette.

The lines and blobs both represent dimension in different ways, one being more flat while the other is 3D.

To decide the layout for the booklet, I asigned each group member to create a mock layout. As a group we would leave comments and decide on parts of the layouts we liked and wanted to use for the booklet.

We decided to include aspects such as an offsetted outlined title, headshots on the second page of the spread, and splitting up the body copy in our layout for the booklet.

Each member of the committee designed their spreads using the mock layout, so the overall booklet was very cohesive before final edits were made by me. Since the body copy was split over the spread, many spreads included large images in the center of the spread, creating more emphasis on the collections in the show.
