Within a group with 2 other designers, we were tasked with creating an original, speculative brand that tackles a unique problem within its industry. We had to design for the touch points of branding, interaction, and service design.
As a group, we developed a makeup brand that provides products in only one shade. The product can change color according to the user’s skin tone, and the color-changing powder used in the products is sold on its own and can be mixed with existing products to achieve a person’s perfect tone.
We built our brand, Magichue, by creating a logo, color palette, website, and print and digital marketing materials.

While this was a group project, I focused on branding like logo development, package design, and marketing materials. I designed the packaging for the brand's products using Blendr to 3D model the bottles and add distinct branding like the star motif caps. I also designed ads in the form of billboards, a poster, and a postcard. The ads were created to promote the product in an inclusive and appealing way.
I also created a promotional ad that would appear as a commercial on television, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. Our brand was built as inclusive, relatable, and welcoming, so I made sure those aspects could be seen through the video's tone.

To develop our brand, we ideated a name for our concept of color-changing makeup. We went through various names like huesive, true blend, inclhuesive, and snap tone before deciding on Magichue. Our brand emphasized inclusion, innovation, and sustainability. It pushes to break ground in the makeup industry by providing a product that works for all people. The tone of the brand is relatable and welcoming to anyone who uses or wants to use makeup.
Our color palette was chosen to represent skin tones, so we replaced black and white with a dark brown and a light cream. We used a mint color for a strong sense of brand recognition amoung the skin tone colors.
When we decided our name, our next step was to design a logo. We all came up with various sketches for the logo, but we ended up going with a sketch I designed and finalized. We came up with a logo and a logo mark for packaging and social media. We created various variations of the logo so it could be adapted to any color background when used for advertisings. Instead of creating a black and white version of the logo, we used Magichue's brand colors hue darkest and hue lightest.

Our exclusion zone is marked with the star that dots the "i" and allows space around the logo so it wont be crowded when placed next to other logos for collaborations.

We choose a script font to include in the brand to match the idea of whimsy and magic. That is also how we developed our pattern, which is used on marketing materials to keep them visually interesting. The stars and dots can be put in any color within the color palette, and can be rearrange in different positions as long as they stay proportional to each other in size.

Each member of the group created various sketches for the development of the logo. I came up with these designs when ideating for the current logo. For many of these ideas, I wanted a stand-out shape that could be associated with the brand, many of them being stars.

I designed the packaging for Magichue and wanted to emphasize the brand's star motif through the packaging to make it tie in with the branding. Many makeup brands will have distinct tops or llids that are unique to them, and I wanted to replicate that with Magichue, making the tops a star in the brand's main color.
Magichue is a sustainable brand, so the inner tube of the foundations and concealers are removable and refillable to reduce waste.

I created different examples of how Magichue could market it's product. I designed a postcard, poster, and 2 billboards. The poster highlighted the product in collaboration with another makeup brand to further it's reach in the market.
Since the brand aims to change the beauty industry at a global level, advertisements will be catered to each country and will expand to multiple languages. I created an example of that with a ad in Korean.

We began with research of the precedents in the makeup industry to build the idea for our brand. Color changing makeup already existed, so we saw how it was applied to get a better sense of how our brand should move forward.

We found that between these products, they shared the common ingredients of Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Red 27 (CI 45410), with the exception of Kosimi Foundation, which had no ingredients listed.
Red 27 was the most common way for products to change color. When it comes into contact with the skin and reacts with the natural acidity of the skin, it undergoes a color change, offering a personalized shade for the user. Products that use pH to change their color are more based on the user’s skin tone mixing with Red 27’s pink color and less matching of the exact skin tone since everyone’s skin have a pH of about 5.

Another way for products to be color changing is through encapsulated pigments, which are tiny capsules that break and release pigment when rubbed into the skin. The capsules use titanium dioxide, red iron oxide, yellow iron oxide, and black iron oxides as the main ingredients that change color, so unfortunately it isn’t universal for all skin tones.
Cellulose Bonding can also be used. The surface of inorganic pigments, like iron oxides is coated with ultra-fine titanium dioxide using cellulose as a binding medium. By the shearing force, the color of the pigment itself is revealed, and the foundation reaches a process of converting from a white color to a skin tone color.
From our research, we developed 3 personas to represent the market's pain points based on personal experiences that either we or others around us experienced in the makeup industry.
